Last night, Sony released Firmware 3.40 for the PlayStation 3. Now, a firmware update isn't anything PlayStation Network users aren't used to, but this system update actually does quite a bit – stuff like improved Facebook integration, video tools and a slick new Trophy display.

None of it's rocket science, but if you turn your PlayStation back on right after downloading the update, it might be hard to see all the new stuff right away. So, we put together a quick starter's guide on where to go and what to do to access your PS3's new bells and whistles.

Watch our PS3 own Facebook in this video.

Perhaps the coolest thing Firmware 3.40 does is link the Photo section on your Cross Media Bar (the line of icons when you turn on the PS3) to your Facebook or Picasa profiles.

After downloading 3.40, you'll need to scroll over to that Photo section and click "Photo Gallery." It's going to ask you to download another update, but once you do, you'll be able to jump around the photos you have on your PlayStation 3 hard drive in a number of ways. Find the photos or photo you dig, and click Triangle. This brings up a menu bar that allows you to rotate the photo, make a playlist and so on, but it also allows you to use the new "Upload" feature. Click this, and you can choose to send the photo to your Facebook or Picasa account. Enter your information if you haven't already, and after a short upload to an album you just created on the PS3 or to one that already existed, the image is live on the web.

Neat, right?

The even more awesome thing? You can view the Facebook comments people are leaving on your photos through your PS3. From your image gallery, click R1 twice so that you go from the Library Area past the Playlist Area to the PlayStation Network Area. Here, you can jump into your uploads or see what your friends have posted to Facebook – complete with "New" stickers letting you know who has updated recently.

Click a library and then full screen a photo with X. Use the D-Pad to switch between photos. If one of these images has comments on it, they'll appear as Post-It notes on the image. If the image has a ton of comments, there won't be notes, but by hitting Triangle and selecting "Comment" you can see the messages as well as post yourself. From this menu, you can also add descriptions, delete the photo, print it and start a slideshow.

Along with the system update, the PlayStation Network got updated on Facebook, as well. If you already have a Facebook account – or want to start one – head over to the PlayStation Network Application and log into your PSN profile. Once that's done, you'll be transported to your new Facebook PSN profile page that shows all of your Trophies, your progress and so on. Click the friends tab, and you can link up with your Facebook/PSN friends and compare stats.

Once registered, you can click the little plus symbol on the top of your profile page to add the PlayStation Network App to your tabbed section that includes your wall, info and so on.

Under the Video section of the Cross Media Bar, you'll now find an arrow marked "Video Editor & Uploader." Click on it, download the update, and you're ready to begin. Here, is a simple three-step process where you can take videos from your hard drive, delete segments, tweak playback speeds, add up to 30 characters of text as well as music, and then share the content with YouTube and Facebook.

It's cool, but there are a few catches. For starters, you can only edit original videos (nothing that's been copyrighted) that you've put on your system since 3.40 went live. This means that any videos you had on your system before the update can't be edited with this program (although you could probably copy them to a memory stick, delete the original and copy the original back from the stick). You can add your own text, adjust the size, and have it stay up for a set period of time. There are no effects options, such as transitions. You cannot add your own music, but there is some canned music to slap over your edited video.

The program is simple, but it's still a nice addition. If you need the basics on how to get videos on to your PS3, take a USB drive, create a "VIDEO" folder on it, and dump your video files into that folder. Then, plug that into your PS3, scroll to video, and copy the contents of the drive. Not every video format is accepted by the PS3, so don't be alarmed if there are videos missing.

One of 3.40's smallest additions is actually a big one for Trophy Whores. If you're one of those folks who stays awake until 3 a.m. playing Hannah Montana so that you can get another Platinum Trophy, you'll be pleased to scroll to your PSN Friends section on the Cross Media Bar and see that everyone's PSN level (the constantly climbing reward for unlocking Trophies) is now displayed next to their PSN name. You no longer have to dig to see how you stack up against your friends -- the information is right there.
